Valuable train horn stolen from Railway & Forestry Museum

PRINCE GEORGE — Prince George RCMP is investigating the theft of a train horn that was stolen from the Central B.C. Railway and Forestry Museum the night of February 22, 2025.

Police say the horn, valued at around $5,000, was a unique piece of machinery and was not a crime of opportunity but likely planned in advance.

According to the Central B.C. Railway and Forestry Museum, this isn’t the first train horn that has been stolen with three others having been taken last year. In response the museum has been removing the horns off the locomotives but was unable to remove this one in time.

“We actually had a collector in Vancouver sort of alerted us that he noticed that some of the horns were disappearing and showing up on the, ‘the dark web’,” says Parks Manager, Brian Wiche. “He thought he saw a picture of fire horn on the, locomotive right behind us here. And, we had a chance to get out there ahead of this thief and try and get it off. Unfortunately, the bolts were frozen on there, so we were getting a bigger tool to take it off the next morning. And that night, the guy came with an angle grinder and just packed it right off.

“Investigators are asking for people to keep an eye out on their online marketplaces and especially websites where such items might be resold. If you see anything similar, please report it to your local police or to the Prince George RCMP non-emergency line at 250-561-3300,” says Cpl. Jennifer Cooper.
