PRINCE GEORGE — Statistics Canada says the year-over-year unemployment rate rose from 6.3 per cent in March, 2024 to 7.1 per cent in March, 2025 in Prince George.

Labour analyst Vincent Ferrao says the participation rate, or the number of people aged 15 and above working, dipped slightly to 65.9 per cent in March 2025 compared to 66.3 per cent in March 2024.

The number of people employed last month was 50,300 compared to 50,200 in March 2024.

Regionally, he says there were slight job gains in public adminstration while there were small declines in wholesale, retail and natural resources.

Provincially, Ferrao says the year-over-year unemployment rate rose from 5.5 per cent in March 2024 to 6.1 per cent last month while the year-over-year national rate increased from 6.6 per cent to 6.7 per cent.

Nationally, Canada’s economy posted in March its biggest job loss since January of 2022 amid the heightened uncertainty caused by U-S tariffs.
Statistics Canada says the economy shed 33,000 jobs in March as the unemployment rate ticked up slightly to 6.7 per cent.
It says 62,000 full-time jobs were lost — offset by a gain in part-time employment.
Today’s jobs report comes ahead of the next Bank of Canada interest rate decision on April 16.
