The toxic drug crisis was declared a public health emergency nine years ago today in B-C as the powerful opioid fentanyl emerged on the illicit drug market.
Provincial Health Minister Josie Osborne says in a statement marking the day that thousands of lives have been lost to poisoned drugs since then.
She says the crisis continues to have a “devastating impact” throughout the province for users, their families and front line workers.
Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry says the increasing toxicity and unpredictability of illicit drugs means B-C needs to continue to be innovative in its response.
