HIXON, B.C. — The BC Wildfire Service says the fire burning in the vicinity of Hixon is being held at 80 hectares in size.

That means the fire which sparked on Friday (May 2) near Naver Creek is not expected to spread beyond pre-determined boundaries based on current fuel and weather conditions. This comes after the BC Wildfire Service reported “good progress” on the fire Saturday afternoon.

There were 40 BC Wildfire Service personnel are on site Sunday, who were working on breaking up slash piles and doing mop up work to limit heat pockets that could reignite.

All identified danger trees within striking distance have been removed, and crews will continue monitoring as operations move inward,” a BCWS statement said.

“Slash piles within the fire perimeter are expected to continue burning down over the next week. These are being monitored closely to prevent deeper ignition into root systems.”

All evacuation orders and alerts that were put in place by the Regional District of Fraser-Fort George were rescinded Saturday evening.

The fire is not threatening Highway 97, though people are being asked to not stop along the highway in the vicinity of the fire.

“Residents and travellers along Highway 97 may continue to see smoke within the fire perimeter, however, smoke coming from green, unburned areas or outside the known perimeter should be reported immediately,” the Wildfire Service added.
