PRINCE GEORGE – College Heights Secondary has established itself as a premier institution for teaching second languages in the province. This year, it has taken a significant step by becoming the first secondary school to offer a Japanese cooking class.

“ I just saw this as a way to grow the program, too. There were a lot of kids that were interested in Japanese culture. Part of our Japanese class here at College Heights. We do Food Day every Wednesday, and the kids are always really keen to see these different foods.”

When considering Japanese cuisine, sushi often springs to mind, especially since it prominently features raw fish. However, this year’s Japanese program at College Heights is set to shine a light on the richness of Japan’s culinary culture through its cooking class.

Students learn traditional cooking techniques as if they were part of a Japanese household, providing them with a more immersive experience.

Japanese cuisine not only offers a unique taste adventure that many North Americans might not be familiar with, but it also presents a challenge in introducing students to its authentic flavours.

Various Japanese cooking utensils are used to further enrich the experience, reflecting Japan’s broader cultural context.

The Japanese program has been a staple at the school for over twenty years. Each year, students have the opportunity to participate in an exchange trip to Japan, deepening their understanding and appreciation of the culture.
