PRINCE GEORGE – 1979. Terry Fox launched the Prince George to Boston marathon. It ended a stone’s throw from the downtown pool. It was the journey that launched the Marathon of Hope, which, tragically, ended well before it intended goal. At the time, Terry Fox hoped to raise a million dollars for cancer awareness and research.

Thirty years ago, as part of a wish to complete that goal, “Million Dollar Jim” – Jim Terrion – chose to take up the mantle. And this week, he reached his goal.

Born deaf, he drew on the fortitude he witnessed in Terry Fox.

“I felt really excited about it and so much joy. There has been a great deal of work to achieve this goal. And I’m over the top,” he says. ”

The efforts are much appreciated by Terry’s brother, Fred, and the family.

“I first met Jim in 94, 1994, but he’s been fundraising for the Terry Fox Foundation since ’91. He did his own walk across Canada, and in 1990, the Silent Walk and raising money for deaf and hard-of-hearing organizations,” he explains. “But, you know, for us, it’s been amazing. So he’s been incredible, so determined, so passionate, dedicated to doing what he can and keeping Terry’s dream going and finding an end to cancer.”

Fred Fox muses on what his brother would think about Jim’s efforts and those of others in the battle against cancer,.

“When he was in Toronto, he said, ‘Even if I don’t finish, we need others to continue. It’s got to keep going without me.’ And so many Canadians. People. Ten thousand schools in this country, 600 communities. Fundraisers like Jim Terrion have taken up the challenge that Terry gave us. And he would be so proud that Canadians and people around the world have done that.”

So what’s next for Million Dollar Jim?

“Maybe $1.1 million or $1.2 million. And keep building from there.”

So don’t expect to see the end of Million Dollar Jim.
