RCMP confirm weigh scale fires linked, suspected arson

PRINCE GEORGE – The Prince George RCMP have confirmed the weigh scale fire on the Hart Highway is suspicious in nature, and linked to a previous weigh scale fire that caused hundreds of thousands of dollars in damages.

“It’s definitely being investigated as an act of arson, and we know that it is connected to the arson that happened at the southern Prince George weigh scales on December 24, 2024,” Cpl. Jennifer Cooper of the Prince George RCMP said.

Cooper couldn’t share all the reasons why police know the two fires are connected, as it’s an ongoing investigation, but one obvious sign was the fact that “good job McCreadie” was spray painted at both sites. Cooper explained this is a likely reference to Constable McCreadie, a traffic services officer.

“We are still trying to narrow down our list of suspects, so the motivation behind these acts and the spray paint has yet to be determined,” she said.

These connected incidents have caught the eye of the B.C. General Employees’ Union (BCGEU), which is raising serious safety concerns for Commercial Vehicle Safety and Enforcement (CVSE) officers.

“We understand that the province has secured a third party to do a risk assessment at CVSE facilities, and that will be done by law enforcement experts, but one of our big concerns here, frankly, is that we need more than that,” said the BCGEU’s President Paul Finch.

“We need urgent safety upgrades and, of course, a full review of exactly what’s required to keep our members safe here,” Finch continued.

Among other duties, CVSE officers are primarily tasked with regular safety inspections of commercial vehicles. This can create dangerous situations, whether it be an inspection of a vehicle potentially harboring a dangerous person, or even just being on the side of the road in high-speed situations. This, among other reasons, highlights the need for urgent changes to keep the officers safe.

“There’s been lighting issues, camera issues, there’s other very granular, specific things that we’ve identified, they’ve been jointly identified and they haven’t been acted upon. CVSE officers can sometimes work alone, and that’s a concern too, so we want to see the appropriate staffing in place. We want to make sure that the facilities are upgraded, that the upgrades that are required to ensure the safety of our members who do this important work are prioritized, that it’s done immediately,” Finch said.

Finch adds that CVSE officers do serve in law enforcement roles, and also look like other law enforcement officers, so he believes there needs to be additional steps taken to allow them to serve in this role safely.

“Aside from considering additional use of force tools, which we think may be appropriate for CVSE officers to defend themselves and those around them, what we really think is necessary here as well is a central dispatch system. There needs to be a proper communication system in place. We don’t have that right now,” he said.

As for the investigation surrounding the arson, Prince George RCMP are asking for anyone with any information to please contact them. Additionally, if you have any dash cam footage of the area in the time frame of 9:30-10:30 p.m. on July 19, that could be helpful in the investigation.
