City kicks off Community Wildfire Resiliency Plan engagement

Aug 7, 2025 | 4:27 PM

PRINCE GEORGE – The City of Prince George is in the process of updating its wildfire plan and is encouraging community involvement throughout the summer. Residents are invited to share their thoughts on priorities and concerns, and provide feedback regarding upcoming fuel mitigation efforts at Shane Lake.

The Community Wildfire Resiliency Plan (CWRP) aims to lower wildfire risks and safeguard neighbourhoods, natural areas, and vital infrastructure in Prince George. This new plan will replace the City’s 2018 Community Wildfire Protection Plan and will serve as a roadmap for local actions to enhance preparedness, response, and recovery from wildfires. Since the 2018 plan was released, the City has initiated or completed numerous high and moderate priority projects and recommendations.

The updated CWRP will incorporate local conditions, align with provincial best practices, and utilize FireSmart principles, while also reflecting the priorities of residents, Indigenous communities, and regional partners. Additionally, it will sync up with other City strategies, such as the Official Community Plan, Climate Change Mitigation Plan, and Emergency Response Planning.

Residents are invited to three upcoming events:

Tuesday, August 12, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Shane Lake picnic area. Join city staff and forestry professionals at Shane Lake to ask questions and discuss the upcoming Shane Lake fuel management prescription and the CWRP.

Wednesday, August 13, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Lheidli T’enneh Memorial Park pavilion. Join city staff and forestry professionals to discuss wildfire preparedness, ask questions, and provide feedback on the plan.

Thursday, August 14, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the BCNE. Join city staff and forestry professionals to discuss wildfire preparedness, ask questions, and provide feedback on the plan.

Residents can also participate on the City website by dropping a pin on the interactive map to identify areas of concern, prioritize future actions, and ask questions now until August 31.

The draft plan will be presented to the Council for review later this fall.
