Committee approves advocacy plan for public restrooms

PRINCE GEORGE – The City of Prince George’s committee on intergovernmental affairs approved a advocacy plan Tuesday evening that aims to secure funding from the provincial and federal governments for improved public bathroom access. As downtown business owner Eoin Foley says that there are many publicly funded services around downtown that allow restroom use but they aren’t available 24 hours a day and changing this may be a better solution to the bathroom problem.

“I think the best solution there would be for some of these organizations to extend their hours and make their bathroom facilities available to anybody that needs them and using the staff there who are ready to handle situations like overdoses and mental health crisis.” says Foley.

With few public restrooms available, this can lead to further problems, but as city councillor Garth Frizzell says, that while the washrooms are necessary, there is no mandate at any level to get it done.

Frizzell: ” We need to have spaces where people can relieve their bodily functions. It’s not a question of if but rather a question of what and how many. In politics, it’s also a question of funding because it is something that absolutely needs to be done. “
