PRINCE GEORGE — A recording breaking Parkinson SuperWalk in Prince George as a few hundred walkers gathered Saturday (Sept. 6) morning to raise over $51,000.

The Lheidli T’enneh Memorial Park was a hive of activity, and this year’s total amount just about tripled the previous record of $18,000.

Selen Alpay, a well-known philanthropist and the owner of Canadian Tire Prince George, raised just under $23,000 on his own. Last month, Alpay publicly announced he was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease. His team – Selen’s Squad – raised just shy of $34,000.

The event is the largest fundraiser for the Parkinson Society of BC, which offers programs and services for people affected by the degenerative neurological disorder. More than 17,500 people in B.C are living with the disease which is not curable though it can be treated.

Money raised through these walks will help support the growth of its programs and services offered by the Parkinson Society of BC. Here in the north, there are also advocacy efforts underway in support of a Movement Disorder Clinic.

“Every specialized Movement Disorder Clinic in British Columbia is located in the Lower Mainland or in the south and for those of us living in the north, that means patients and caregivers must travel just to see a neurologist with the right expertise,” Serena Sanghera, a SuperWalk Organizer, said in August.

“These aren’t quick checkups, they’re complex, assessments are required, multiple visits. For many, that travel is physically exhausting and simply not possible.”
