PRINCE GEORGE — The City of Prince George will be getting new sheriffs as the Province announces the deployment of the latest batch of new graduates from the Justice Institute of British Columbia.

In a news release, the Ministry of Attorney General says 28 new sheriffs are set to begin their careers as they’ll be assigned to work in provincial courthouses in Prince George, Nanaimo and the Lower Mainland.

“We are pleased to welcome 28 new deputy sheriffs to the BC Sheriff Service,” said Roger Phillips, the chief sheriff and executive director of the BC Sheriff Service.

“This group has worked hard to meet the demands of a challenging program, and I know they will serve B.C.’s justice system with professionalism and dedication.”

The Province says sheriffs are highly trained peace officers who protect people at B.C. courts, while also helping to transport people who are accused and convicted of crimes. They also provide security for the judiciary, Crown, defence and staff in addition to other enforcement duties.

These new sheriffs are set to undergo field training over the next few weeks and they will be ready for deployment as of Nov. 10. As well, the Province said the next class of sheriff recruits will begin training on Nov. 3.

“Sheriffs play a crucial role in our justice system, ensuring our courthouses are safe and secure so that people can focus on their cases without worrying about their safety,” Attorney General Niki Sharma added, in a statement.

“We are proud to welcome this new class of sheriffs who have completed a rigorous training program, and we thank them for their commitment to public service.”
