Kiel Giddens rules out leadership bid

PRINCE GEORGE — Prince George-Mackenzie Conservative MLA Kiel Giddens won’t be running for the party’s leadership next year.

Giddens says he had a few people reach out to him, encouraging him to run but in the end said it would be too hard on his young family.

“My kids are still very young, and right now they need their Dad more than anything,” he wrote on a social media account. “Public service matters deeply to me, but family always comes first. I also want to stay focused on the issues that matter most to the people of Prince George-Mackenzie.”

Giddens says he isn’t ready to endorse anyone yet but says that person should make able to make tough and common sense decisions. He also hopes the new leader doesn’t forget about the North.

“It’s very important for me that the wealth generated in this part of the province needs to be respected and we need quality public services in this part of the province that we’re not currently getting in my opinion under the NDP.

“I also want to see a leader who can bring people together. Parties only work and can win when it’s a big tent – not a leader that divides people.”

The need for a new leader was prompted by a caucus revolt which ultimately lead to John Rustad resigning as leader earlier this month.

The party is expected to release the details of its leadership race soon.
