PRINCE GEORGE – Jaw dropping statistics when it comes to the damages caused by crime in the downtown core. A survey from Downtown Prince George indicates crime has cost businesses millions of dollars this year. “They estimated about 4.5 million in damages in the last 12 months” said Executive Director of Downtown Prince George Chrisie Berry.

“This is all, broken windows, fires, graffiti, vandalism, theft and all that stuff is between 55 businesses is $4.5 million in damages. That’s really what stood out the most to us. Between the survey and the responses we got at the rally, the downtown businesses and the community are seeing the same thing, right? They want downtown to be vibrant and a place they want to go, but right now they don’t feel safe doing that.” said Berry.

The 4.5 million dollar impact includes a single 2 million dollar loss for a fire explosion which still leaves a 2.5 million dollar hit over the twelve months to downtown business. One local Councillor says the survey’s results should surprise no-one and adds concerns are being heard and solutions are being discussed.

“The sad reality is there’s nothing in there that’s not, a big surprise. You know, myself as a councilor and members of council have heard loud and clear from our business community the the struggles and challenges they are facing right now in our downtown core. We heard it loud and clear from residents at the Downtown Chamber of Commerce rally at CN Centre back in October. I think everyone sees the potential that our downtown has and are really just pushing for a better situation that we can make Prince George and downtown, what everyone wants it to be, which is a vibrant hub of our community.” said City Councilor Tim Bennett.

The results of the survey have been sent to members of city council to be discussed further.
