Increase in measles cases in northern B.C. prompt vaccination clinics
PRINCE GEORGE — Concerning numbers from the BC Centre for Disease Control indicate that as of December 18, 81.5 per cent per cent of all confirmed cases of measles in British Columbia (410) have been detected in the Northern Health region (334).
While the majority of those cases are in the northeast (292), Northern Health has scheduled a series of measles vaccine clinics in Prince George on December 23, December 29 and December 30 at the Northern Interior Health Unit at 1444 Edmonton Street from 9 a.m. till noon and again from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.
“It (Northern Health) has definitely been a hot spot for measles activity for the last number of months, that’s why we’re trying to get out there and to provide information to folks so that they can make the best decisions for themselves to protect their health and their loved ones. And of course vaccines provide the best protection,” said Dr. Diana Bark, Medical Health Officer with Northern Health.
Bark warns that measles is a highly, highly contagious illness noting that for many people measles results in cold symptoms including a cough, runny nose and the characteristic measles rash. However for some people, contracting measles can lead to more severe outcomes.
