Prince George – New Year’s Eve is Wednesday and many people around the city will be ringing in the New Year with drinks and celebrations. Lots of people will be out and wanting to get home safely along with their vehicles and that’s where Operation Red Nose comes in. They will come pick up you and your car and get you home safely. Each ride is free of charge but a donation of any amount is greatly appreciated with all donations staying in the community. With New Year’s Eve the biggest of the year for Operation Red Nose it takes a large group of dedicated volunteers to make the operation a successful one.

“We’re going to have about a dozen teams of people. Those are three person teams that are going to be out driving people home and then we’ve also got our volunteers who are going to be at our headquarters at ICBC. It’s going to be more than 50 people out tomorrow night just there to donate their time to make sure people get home safe.” said Operation Red Nose Co-Chair Garth Frizzell.

Operation Red Nose is sponsored by the Prince George – Nechako Rotary Club with many vehicles being donated by The Driving Force and for those volunteers who donate their time to getting their fellow citizens home safe during the holidays it’s a rewarding feeling.

“I think this is my 15th year. I joined rotary about 15 years ago and started Operation Red Nose around the same time. It’s just such a great program to be able to get people home and it’s a community project. There’s always people thinking that they should be able to drive home with the little bit of liquid courage that they’ve got going so the story is if you’re drinking, give us a call we’ll take you home with your vehicle.” said Operation Red Nose Co-Chair Dolly Hilton.

After almost three decades of successfully keeping the streets safe during holiday times Frizzell praises the volunteers that keep the operation going every single year.

“We’ve been here for 27 years doing Operation Red Nose and some of the volunteers have been here almost that long. It’s remarkable that they keep coming back giving their time and helping out the community. It’s really extraordinary. ” said Frizzell.

Operation Red Nose begins at 9pm Wednesday night and runs until 3am Thursday morning. If you need a ride home on New Years Eve call 250-962-7433.
