PRINCE GEORGE — Environment Canada has issued a special air quality statement for the Prince George area due to elevated fine particulate matter.

The weather alert comes as the Ministry of Environment and Parks and Northern Health have issued an Air Quality Warning for Prince George. A similar warning is also in place in Vanderhoof, and officials say current conditions are expected to persist until the weather changes and/or local emissions are reduced.

“Exposure to fine particulate matter is particularly a concern for infants, older adults, individuals with chronic conditions (such as asthma, COPD, heart disease, and diabetes) or respiratory infections, and those who are pregnant,” the alert said. “Persons with chronic underlying medical conditions or acute infections should postpone or reduce strenuous exercise until the warning is ended.”

People who experience symptoms like continuing eye or throat irritation, chest discomfort, shortness of breath, cough or wheezing are asked to follow the advice of their health care provider.

“Protect your indoor air from outdoor air pollution,’ the statement added. “Actions can include using a clean, good quality air filter in your ventilation system and/or a certified portable air cleaner.”

“Check in on others who are in your care or live nearby who may be more likely to be impacted by outdoor air pollution.”

The next update is expected to come on Monday, Jan. 19.
