Erratic weather today reflective of entire month of unstable conditions

PRINCE GEORGE – Prince George was hit by a strong snowfall and blustery winds on the afternoon of February 26, but the snow appeared to leave as quickly as it came, as the thick flakes blowing almost sideways at times ended in around one hour. This type of weather has characterized an entire month of unstable weather, which Environment and Climate Change Canada is due to an unstable atmosphere above us.

“We’ve really got a bit of an unstable atmosphere over top of us at this point in time. That’s really enabled us to get some embedded convection going on with that snowfall, so we’re seeing some fairly intense snowfall rates at times over the Prince George area sort of embedded within a larger scale area of precipitation,” said Meteorologist Brian Proctor with Environment and Climate Change Canada.

“We’ve really been right on the storm track for the month of February, so right along the jet stream. So we have these impulses that have come in and moved south of us, allowing that colder air from the arctic spill south at times. But then the warmness comes back again as the whole pattern meanders a bit further north,” he continued.

The rest of the week could see more precipitation, as the forecast is calling for snow in the coming days and rain early next week. Despite the snowfall Prince George has seen in recent days, Proctor notes up to now it’s been a warmer than usual month.

“In general terms, it’s been a bit of a warmer than normal winter on average by one degree or two degrees in the Prince George area at about 120% of normal precipitation. And we have seen that sort of precipitation really fairly steady through all three winter months, so December, January and February to this point in time. In contrast to what we’ve been experiencing in the last few winters, this one has been a very sort of traditional winter for us in the Prince George area,” Proctor said.

Snow is on the forecast for Thursday night and Friday’s day and night, while Saturday and Sunday are calling for more clear conditions.
