Spirit of the North Healthcare Foundation takes one big step for cancer care

PRINCE GEORGE – The Spirit of the North Health Care Foundation’s job is to raise money for specialized, but critical medical equipment. This year, the foundation received over thirty requests and the focus is cardiac care – a badly-needed service in the region.

“Right now, any interventional cardiac care we are sending down south, and so our aim is to close that cardiac gap and bring those services and those programs to northern B.C. out of Prince George,” explains Aimee Cassie, CEO for the Foundation. “But you’ll start to see an ecosystem develop right across the region as we work to strengthen cardiac care.”

One of the more significant pieces of equipment is a diathermy machine – a small, but mighty device. Typically, the equipment doesn’t get put to work until the bill is paid. But this time, the equipment is being offered up on a loan until such time as the hospital can secure its own. Remarkable, says the Foundation. And a leap of faith.

“It’s a lot of faith. But we’re very confident we can do it. We have seen it before with some smaller pieces. But I think it’s really exciting because we’re going to be able to see patients benefit right now. So when we’re talking with donors and when we’re talking about growing this cardiac program, we’re actually making huge strides right now.”

And there are two patients – one from Prince George and the other from Burns Lake, who will be treated with the temporary equipment; the very first two patients to get the treatment here.

“It is so exciting,” says Dr. Yaser Ahmed, Regional Lead for Cardiac and Stroke for Northern Health. “It’s saving them a trip down to Vancouver or Kelowna or, Victoria to receive the service. Absolutely. And they are pleased. They are happy to be some of the initial participants in this launch and, yeah, I can’t imagine how this is relieving for them to receive this care closer to home.”

Soon, Northern Health Unit will be levelled to make way for the new acute care tower and the equipment used now will make the move with everyone else.
