PRINCE GEORGE – A unique event took place at Harwin Elementary School on May 8, 2026, as students led and organized an Indigenous Gala fundraising night.

“It was awesome and really cool to see people fill up the gym and see what we created, and what we modeled,” said grade 6 student Leighton Auger.

“It felt really awesome, I’m glad that I got to be a part of this,” added grade 6 student Raeanne Lyons.

The gym was packed as attendees enjoyed a great evening, including things like:

  • A silent auction
  • Local artist market
  • Fully catered dinner
  • Performances like jingle dancing and drumming
  • A fashion show modeling clothes, with the majority of clothes having had direct student involvement in its creation and design
  • Interactive games throughout the evening.

“We mostly came in during recess or lunch and set everything up. Getting everyone to bring stuff in was a few people going out and asking places to see if anyone would come and give some stuff out,” explained grade 7 student Alexis Jarvis, on the setup process and getting a silent auction established.

“We practiced a lot, and I’ve been loving the practice. It felt nice, it’s more practice to make sure you know what to do on stage,” Lyons added, on the practice for all the choreographed events.

The students were the ones to get everything put in place and ensure the gala went as smoothly as it did, a fact the school staff and students are very proud of.

“We have a really strong leadership team at the school here, and they are very focused. Our drum group goes out in the community and drums at special events. They’re hard working and dedicated and they loved this idea and they just jumped right on board,” said Harwin Elementary School Indigenous Education Worker Jennine Sanderson.

“Our food was made by our youth care worker, and a bunch of our students helped prepare the food. I’m really proud of them, they did great,” Sanderson continued.

Thanks to the high production value and behind the scenes effort of the students, the gala
