PRINCE GEORGE – It is a day of celebration and plenty of pomp and ceremony. It is the 56th convocation for the College of New Caledonia – the Class of ’26.

“This year the college handed out approximately 1450 credentials,” says Cindy Heitman, President of the College of New Caledonia. “Today we’re going to celebrate 709 students as they cross the stage.”

It’s a big day for Vanessa Jack, graduating alongside the hundreds. Her journey here is a long one.

“I grew up in a very small town, and there is a lot of addictions issues in my town. I am recently seven years clean and sober. Eight years ago I was in the LPN program but, due to addictions, I could not complete it. So now I was given a second chance. And I’m here and I’m here to show other Indigenous students whatever age you are or whatever your background is, you can do whatever you want.”

Each year, the College tries to add something unique to the ceremony. This year, the tassels on the caps are different colours, identifying the schools the students are graduating from.

“There’s a significant honour each one of these students have, and the pride they feel in accomplishing their credentials by being able to identify as a member of that school, it helps bring them together to say, ‘Hey, you were in that school as well’,” notes Heitman.

Each graduation is personal for Heitman, who is celebrating her third convocation ceremony.

“There always is a personal moment for me. What’s really beautiful about the college is you have an opportunity to really get to know the students. Hanging out with them on campus, participating in events and just to see some of them from the very first day to finishing their credential and moving on. You get that that Proud Mama feeling. And it really happens for me.”

And while this is one chapter in Vanessa Jack’s journey, she isn’t done yet. She plans to head back to school to get her nursing degree, and she’ll be back at another convocation in the future.

“Just seeing what I can accomplish in sobriety. I have not stopped accomplishing my dreams. And I’ve learned how to dream bigger because of my education that I have.”

Students in Quesnel will enjoy their convocation on June 9.
