QUESNEL — The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) has cleared the RCMP of any wrongdoing following the death of a man in Quesnel last fall.

The IIO says that just after 1 a.m. on October 27, 2025, members of the Quesnel RCMP responded to a call about an unwanted person outside a building on Carson Avenue.

Officers attended and spoke to a man before leaving. Shortly before 830 a.m. that day, BC Emergency Health Officers returned to find the man unresponsive. He was later pronounced dead at hospital.

The investigation found that police approached the man in a concerned and caring manner but that the man was unable or unwilling to cooperate – including an unwillingness to go to hospital.

The man’s medical records also indicate a history of repeated hospitalizations, characterized by his non-cooperation and habitual self-discharge against medical advice. His autopsy report noted the cause of death as “best ascribed to a right-side pneumonia,” but also mentioned “other significant conditions contributing to death” including mixed drug intoxication; pulmonary emphysema; cachexia (wasting of the skeletal muscles); blunt force head injuries consistent with falls; homelessness and hypothermia.

The toxicology report stated that the man’s blood contained methamphetamine at a level at which recreational use overlapped with recorded fatalities. Further, the report continued, the level of para-fluorofentanyl measured was also consistent with fatalities.

Under the circumstances, it was determined the officer in question did not commit an offence.
