Month-long walking challenge hits halfway point

PRINCE GEORGE – The Prince George Hospice and Palliative Care Society is currently in the middle of a month-long walking challenge, a part of its annual Colour Walk campaign.

“It’s our walk 100 kilometres in the month of May challenge, where we are challenging everybody in the community to walk 100 K at their own pace, in their own way, however they wish to walk, in memory of someone that they love,” explained Alicia Fitzpatrick, PG Hospice and Palliative Care Fund Development.

Fitzpatrick says the community reception has been fantastic so far, with more than 135 walkers already committed not just to the 100 kilometre challenge, but the colour walk event itself on May 30. This will take place on May 30 between 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at Lheidli T’enneh Memorial Park, and all funds raised are supporting the children and family grief support groups.

“All of these programs are offered free of cost to anybody who is needing support. There are a lot of youth that have lost somebody significant in their life, and a lot of families. They are able to come here and receive grief support services through our different programs. We have a children’s drop in program and we have a tailored family program for the youth, for children, and for the guardians as well, where they’ll all be in their own separate rooms. But at the end, they come together and learn how to talk to each other and build that resiliency within the family,” Fitzpatrick explained.

The Colour Walk isn’t just about fundraising, it’s also a lively community event enjoyed by many, who love the opportunity to engage in a walk where you’re throwing colourful powders and dyes at each other and reveling in the joy of seeing yourself become a human rainbow.

“We have all of our colour stations, which will be run by our sponsors of this event, as well as the Pattison bubble team. They are always a fan favorite to have the bubble station there. We’ll have live music, barbecue by Save-On-Foods, the Cottonwood Mini Rail will be there, and everybody is invited,” Fitzpatrick said.

If you would like to get involved, Fitzpatrick says it’s never too late to sign up for either the month-long challenge or the event itself, which you can do on the Society’s website.
