DDBGS plant sale launches planting season. Or does it?

PRINCE GEORGE – The David Douglas Botanical Garden Society’s annual plant sale is taking place this weekend

“I would say tomatoes are the biggest seller,” says Grace Morrice. “People love their tomatoes. We have a great variety of tomatoes. Thanks to Bertha and other members of the Society, we grow a lot of a lot of heritage tomatoes. And so you can get a grant, a range of tomatoes like you would not believe. The other thing is the really big seller peppers. I mean, we’re fortunate to have members of the side who grow really cool peppers. And so you can get varieties of peppers, you just can’t that no nursery could actually bring in for you.”

But the list of plants ranges from those tomatoes and peppers to shrubs and trees. But there a very real reason the plants are big sellers locally.

“I think because they’re getting locally grown plants that grow here, like all the perennials that we have, a lot of them have overwintered and people grow them because that’s what they like to grow. So they’ve already tried them in their own gardens,” says Miller.

“The beauty of what we do for a lot of our stuff is we grow it here,” says Morrice. “As much as at all possible, and we overwinter it. We do our best to acclimate them well.”

Traditionally, the May long weekend is the planting weekend, but for a variety of reasons, the resident experts say you may want to rethink that.

“Because actually, May 24 is what you consider the long weekend. This year it’s basically a week early, so you really have to look at your weather and check up forecast, because there’s still going to be some nights that are freezing and then some of the local areas like Beverly and stuff, they’re still getting frost,” says Birthe Miller with the David Douglas Botanical Garden Society.

May long weekend is traditionally the “planting weekend” locally. But for a couple reasons, the resident experts say you may want to revisit that plan.

In other words, if you head out to but those precious plants this weekend but make sure to talk to one of the resident experts to make sure you treat those plants well to reap the benefits all through the summer.
