PRINCE GEORGE – A fundraiser will be held on May 23 at the Rona on Cowart Road in support of Mavrik Turnbull, a 3.5 year old who has been battling high-risk neuroblastoma, a type of cancer, since October of 2024.

“As of February, we were set to come home. He had completed his treatment for the initial high-risk neuroblastoma. Since then, he relapsed the day we were coming home and they found a new tumor growth off of his right kidney. So since then, he’s done two rounds of chemo, which they found that the tumor was resistant to the chemo, It didn’t really affect him or do anything to the tumor. So they went in for surgery, they removed his right kidney, the tumor, there was a lymph node that was lighting up, and whatever other pieces that were left from the previous tumor, they hopefully got as much as they could,” explained Derek Turnbull, Mavrik’s father.

That relapse now has the Turnbull family preparing to travel to Boston this upcoming Monday, where Mavrik will spend around seven weeks receiving specialized radiation treatment. Despite this setback, Derek says Mavrik and the family are trying to keep it positive.

“He’s had a couple complications, but nothing out of the ordinary for him at this point. He’s in good spirits for the most part. We’re doing okay., it’s just a day-by-day sort of thing for us,” Derek said.

Taking place from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., Derek says the community has supported the fundraiser in a huge way, ranging from many companies donating goods for a raffle, Rona providing the physical space, other companies donating food for a barbecue, and more.

“There will be some games. It’s Mavrik, so nothing with him doesn’t come with hockey, so there will be some hockey events and stuff like that too,” Derek said.

Mavrik has become a well-known figure in Prince George thanks to many community fundraisers, and Derek said he is always blown away and incredibly grateful for how supportive Prince George has been of his son and the family.

“This community is incredible, I don’t know any other place like Prince George that does what they do. They’ve rallied behind so many different families in this town, us especially, with everything that Mavrik’s been through and we’ve been through. No matter where we go, there’s always somebody from here that’s looking out for us,” Derek said.

Derek added a huge thank you to everyone who’s been involved in supporting Mavrik, be it companies, individuals, well-wishers, and everyone in between.
