Domestic travel on the rise locally

PRINCE GEORGE – Summer is the busy season for Bobbi Carpino. As owner-operator of the Salmon Valley Campground, the RV traveller is her seasonal bread and butter.

“We have actually seen an increase in our European travelers almost double from what we had in 2025. And taking a look at our U.S. travelers, we are seeing a decline again, about 50% decline. But we are also seeing a good number of British Columbians and Albertans coming up this way and staying with us. And we’ve seen an increase because right now our occupancy is up 15% from last year.”

And those numbers are exactly what StatsCan and other travel gurus are saying: Canadian visits to the United States are decreasing while overseas travel remains high. And Carpino says staycations are even bigger now.

“What we’re hearing is, due to gas prices and just the cost of living, people have really had to start to really think about how they’re spending their money. And so we’re not seeing those families go to Disneyland anymore or kind of going into the States for various reasons there. But ultimately, they are choosing to travel a little bit closer to home.”

Ontario and Quebec are reporting the greatest amount of travel by Canadians within Canada in the last quarter of last year. British Columbia is third.

“We are starting to notice a spike in domestic tourism, as well as some geopolitical tensions between Canada and the US right now,” says Scott McWalter, Executive Director for Tourism Prince George. “So lots of Canadians are choosing to explore their own province, their own country and their own community.”

And according to the Business Development of Canada, a recent survey shows 70 percent are avoiding travel State-side this year, but despite tension between our two nations, Carpino says her US travellers are faithful.

“The travelers themselves are just love Canadians. When they’re travelling from California up to Alaska, they want to purposely stop and support us. We saw that last year where people were saying that they really want to support BC heading up into into the States, because they really do love our country.”
