A few minutes after the hydration break and from shaking off a disallowed goal, Austria pulls ahead 2-1 in the 76nd minute on a own goal by Yazan Al-Arab off a well executed corner kick.

1:33 a.m.

Austrian star Marko Arnautovic scores in the 67th minute but Jordan immediately protests there was a hand ball on the play. The referee agrees to consult with VAR. After the review, it was ruled that Stefan Posch of Austria touched the ball before the goal and, therefore, it was disallowed. Game remains 1-1 as Austria continues to argue during the “hydration break.”

1:15 a.m.

Ali Olwan scores Jordan’s first-ever World Cup goal in the 50th minute to tie the match with Austria at 1-all.

12:57 a.m.

Halftime at San Francisco Bay Area Stadium with Austria leading 1-0.

Romano Schmid scores in the 21st minute to give Austria a 1-0 lead.

Austria and Jordan are scoreless after 16 minutes of play in their Group J World Cup opener in the San Francisco Bay Area Stadium.

11:01 p.m.

The defending World Cup champion Argentina, with Lionel Messi scoring three goals and tying Miroslav Klose for most World Cup goals with 16, defeats Algeria 3-0. Messi (who else?) is named player of the match.

10:51 p.m.

Argentina’s coaching staff did what Algeria couldn’t do — they stopped Lionel Messi from scoring by taking the star off the pitch for a second-half substitution.

Argentina fans gave Messi a lengthy standing ovation after his three-goal performance.

In fact, some Argentina fans shelled out tens of thousands of dollars to follow the World Cup defending champions around the U.S. One group made a 20-hour drive to Tuesday’s opening match in Kansas City against Algeria, living on sandwiches, to save money. But with Lionel Messi possibly playing in his last World Cup, supporters agreed that no drive was too long or ticket too pricey. The fans included Juan Martin who is spending $20,000 to follow the team. He likens the squad and its captain to the Chicago Bulls led by Michael Jordan.

10:40 p.m.

Lionel Messi scores his third goal — his first-ever World Cup hat trick — in the 76th minute to give Argentina a 3-0 lead over Algeria. Messi ties the World Cup career scoring record with 16 goals.

10:24 p.m.

Lionel Messi scores his second goal of the match in the 60th minute to give Argentina a 2-0 lead over Algeria.

10:05 p.m.

Argentina leads Algeria 1-0 at halftime. Both teams have three shots, with Argentina scoring on the only on-target shot of the match.

9:20 p.m.

Lionel Messi becomes the second player to score in five World Cups, giving defending champion Argentina an early 1-0 lead over Algeri. Making his record sixth appearance in the tournament, the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner found a crease in the Algerian defence and easily beat goalkeeper Luca Zidane for his 14th World Cup goal, sending a blue-and-white-clad crowd packed inside Arrowhead Stadium into delirium. Moments earlier, Messi had a goal disallowed for offside.

Lionel Messi leads Argentina on to the pitch in Kansas City ahead of tonight’s World Cup match against Algeria, which is scheduled to get going in the next 20 to 25 minutes.

8:02 p.m.

Kristian Thorstvedt scores seven minutes into second-half stoppage time and Norway completes a 4-1 World Cup victory over Iraq in Boston. After a review, Thorstvedt’s goal is ruled an own goal by Aymen Hussein.

7:40 p.m.

Leo Ostigard scores in the 76th minute to give Norway a 3-1 lead over Iraq. The fans are getting really good at the Viking Row in their team’s first World Cup in 28 years.

7:20 p.m.

Norway continues to lead Iraq 2-1 with 10 minutes gone in the second half. Iraq has more shots on goal (10-7), but Norway has more shots on target (4-1).

6:44 p.m.

Norwegian star Erling Haaland scored in the 29th minute, but Iraq responded 10 minutes later with an equalizer from Aymen Hussein. Then, with three minutes left in the first half, Haaland scores again in Boston.

6:00 p.m.

Iraq is taking on Norway in Group I action at Boston Stadium. Norway is playing in its fourth World Cup, but its first since reaching the round of 16 in 1998. Iraq made its only other appearance in 1986.

5:15 p.m.

France rebounded from a sluggish first half to beat Senegal 3-1. Kylian Mbappé scored twice, moving past Pelé and Lionel Messi with 14 career World Cup goals and setting a French record with his 58th international goal. Bradley Barcola also scored as France got its World Cup campaign off to a winning start.

A federal judge has dismissed Thomas Partey’s bid for emergency relief after Canada denied the Ghana midfielder entry for the World Cup. Partey, who faces rape and sexual assault charges in England and remains in the United States, was refused entry ahead of Ghana’s tournament opener against Panama on Wednesday in Toronto. Justice Roger Lafrenière rejected Partey’s application seeking to temporarily override Canada’s decision, which Ghana officials say is unfair.

4:15 p.m.

U.S. captain Christian Pulisic worked out on his own for a second straight day as he recovers from a calf injury. A team spokesman described the AC Milan forward as day-to-day ahead of Friday’s World Cup game against Australia in Seattle. Pulisic came off at halftime of the Americans’ 4-1 win over Paraguay after feeling stiffness in his left calf.

3:58 p.m.

France and Senegal are scoreless at the half in their Group I match. Senegal outshot France 5-1 in the opening 45 minutes.

3 p.m.

Today’s World Cup action is underway in East Rutherford, N.J., as France takes on Senegal. Two-time champion France finished runner-up to Argentina at the 2022 tournament in Qatar. Senegal’s best performance came in its 2002 debut when it advanced to the quarterfinals.

2:50 p.m.

The status of Canada captain Alphonso Davies remains unclear as the team prepares for Thursday’s FIFA World Cup game against Qatar. The team declined to provide an update on his status today. The star left back has been working his way back from a hamstring injury and was not available for Canada’s opening 1-1 draw with Bosnia-Herzegovina.

1:20 p.m.

Federal Court is expected to rule soon on whether Ghana midfielder Thomas Partey can enter Canada for the World Cup after being denied entry over pending rape and sexual assault charges in England. Partey remains in the United States and is seeking a court order allowing him to travel to Toronto for Ghana’s opening match against Panama on Wednesday. The 32-year-old has pleaded not guilty and argues the public interest supports his temporary entry as an accredited World Cup athlete.

South Korea’s preparations for Thursday’s World Cup match against Mexico have been disrupted by a dispute with domestic media. Reporters were caught on camera mocking captain Son Heung-min over his military-service exemption during an open training session. The Korea Football Association condemned the remarks, and local reports say players have since stopped speaking to domestic media outside official World Cup commitments.

Federal regulators have banned unauthorized drones near World Cup venues and training sites in Toronto and Vancouver through July 7. The restrictions are aimed at managing crowded airspace and protecting event security around stadiums and team facilities. Vozinha, making his World Cup debut at age 40, broke down in tears after helping Cape Verde earn a point in its first-ever World Cup game.

Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo may be soccer royalty, but Sweden defender Gustaf Lagerbielke is the real thing — he’s a baron. The 26-year-old defender, whose family includes counts and members of Sweden’s nobility, played in Sweden’s 5-1 World Cup win over Tunisia and has even been reported to be in line for the throne. Lagerbielke says he’d rather focus on helping Sweden make a run at the World Cup than worry about becoming king.

9:04 a.m.

Tunisia fired coach Sabri Lamouchi after a 5-1 loss to Sweden in its opening World Cup match and replaced him with veteran French coach Hervé Renard. Renard has coached Morocco and Saudi Arabia at the World Cup and led Zambia and Ivory Coast to Africa Cup of Nations titles. Tunisia faces Japan on Saturday and the Netherlands on June 25 as it tries to recover from its opening defeat.

8:18 a.m.

Lionel Messi begins what is expected to be his sixth and final World Cup when defending champion Argentina opens its title defence against Algeria at 9 p.m. in Kansas City. Argentina is seeking to become the first nation since Brazil in 1962 to win back-to-back men’s World Cup titles. France, another tournament favourite, faces Senegal at 3 p.m. in East Rutherford, N.J., while Iraq meets Norway at 6 p.m. in Foxborough, Mass. Austria takes on Jordan at midnight in Santa Clara, Calif.

8:16 a.m.

Ghana’s attempt to get midfielder Thomas Partey into Canada for the World Cup heads to Federal Court today, with a judge set to hear an injunction application challenging his denied entry. Partey, who faces rape and sexual assault charges in England and remains in the United States, was refused entry ahead of Ghana’s tournament opener against Panama in Toronto. Ghana’s government has called the decision unfair, while Canada says immigration decisions are made on a case-by-case basis regardless of the World Cup.
