Vanderhoof prepares for centennial celebration

VANDERHOOF – The District of Vanderhoof is preparing for one of the largest events in its history as residents and visitors gather this weekend to celebrate the community’s 100th birthday.

Founded during the construction of the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway, Vanderhoof was named after railway engineer and publicist Herbert Vanderhoof. The community became a regional hub for forestry and agriculture before experiencing significant growth in the 1950s following the construction of the Kenney Dam.

Today, Vanderhoof is home to roughly 4,300 residents, but organizers are expecting attendance to more than double that number during the centennial festivities.

District Councillor Brian Frenkel says organizers are preparing for as many as 10,000 people throughout the weekend.

“Our plan is to plan for around 10,000 people,” said Frenkel. “We’re working with the RCMP and Safety and Protective Services. It’s a big coordination when you’re a small town because now you’ve got to have six or seven parking lots and we’ve got buses running from the parking lots to the park.”

Frenkel says the transportation and logistics plan has required a significant community effort to ensure visitors can safely access the celebration site.

Events will be centred at Riverside Park and will feature a mix of local entertainment and nationally recognized Canadian performers.

Organizer Ernest Martens says Saturday’s festivities will showcase local musicians on the main stage throughout the afternoon and evening.

Sunday’s schedule begins with an opening ceremony at 3 p.m., followed by performances from a local band and several well-known Canadian acts.

“We have Headpins coming on. After that is Trooper, a well-known Canadian band for sure. And closing the show on Sunday night is Tom Cochrane,” said Martens. “We really stuck hard with the Canadian things like that, and we want to promote it that way.”

The centennial celebration runs throughout the weekend and is expected to draw visitors from across the region.
