IIO clears Prince George RCMP officers in 2025 death

PRINCE GEORGE — PRINCE GEORGE — The Independent Investigations Office of BC says there are no reasonable grounds to believe Prince George RCMP officers committed an offence in connection with the death of a man last year.

Officers were called to a Prince George home early August 24, 2025, following a noise complaint. Police found a man inside a locked bedroom, bleeding from self-inflicted wounds and experiencing what was later determined to be a toxic drug overdose.

Police forced the door partially open after the man said he was dying and could not open it. The IIO says officers then saw him holding what appeared to be a broken table leg with a metal bracket attached. Officers backed away and spent roughly 40 minutes attempting to communicate with him before entering the room again.

The man was found unresponsive. Officers began CPR, but he was later pronounced dead. An autopsy determined the cause of death was mixed drug toxicity involving cocaine, quetiapine and diphenhydramine.

The IIO concluded officers were not required to take the risks associated with entering a dark, confined space and confronting someone they believed was armed.

However, Chief Civilian Director Jessica Berglund raised concerns that RCMP failed to immediately notify the IIO. The agency was instead notified by a family member nearly a month later.

Berglund said that failure resulted in material evidence being lost and compromised the investigation and reliability of its conclusions. The case will not be referred to the BC Prosecution Service for consideration of charges.
