Concerns raised over draft sister city proposal between Prince George and Jiangmen
Concerns are being raised about a proposed sister city agreement with Jiangmen, China, with one city councillor saying more information is needed before council signs on to a relationship that could last two decades.
PRINCE GEORGE — The City of Prince George is continuing to explore a potential sister city agreement with Jiangmen, China, a partnership supporters believe could create new economic opportunities, strengthen cultural ties and expand business relationships. However, some members of council say more work must be done before any formal agreement is signed.
The proposal was recently discussed at the city’s Intergovernmental Affairs Committee, where council received additional information about the potential relationship and feedback from both Global Affairs Canada and British Columbia’s Intergovernmental Relations Secretariat.
Supporters of the initiative say a sister city agreement could help Prince George pursue new international partnerships at a time when communities across British Columbia are looking to diversify trade and investment opportunities.
