PRINCE GEORGE — The UNBC Timberwolves men’s soccer program has strengthened its roster with the addition of German defender Luis Hirsch, who has committed to the Green and Gold for the upcoming season.

Originally from Baden-Baden, Germany, the 18-year-old brings versatility to the Timberwolves lineup. Hirsch can play both defensive midfield and centre back, giving head coach Steve Simonson another option in the middle of the field.

Hirsch has been involved in the sport since the age of five and says soccer has played a significant role throughout his life.

“I love soccer because I have been playing it for as long as I can remember,” said Hirsch. “My team has always felt like a second family to me.”

That sense of community was one of the factors that drew him to UNBC, where he plans to study General Business.

“What impressed me the most was the beautiful campus and the amazing nature surrounding it,” Hirsch said.

The newest Timberwolf also said he was impressed by Simonson’s approach to coaching.

“What impressed me the most about Coach Steve was his sense of humor,” said Hirsch. “He made everyone feel comfortable while still being professional and passionate about the team.”

Simonson believes Hirsch’s versatility, work ethic and competitive nature will make him a valuable addition to the program.

“Luis is a tenacious defensive midfielder with a really strong engine and high compete level,” Simonson said. “He’s making great strides adjusting to our system of play and we think he’ll be a strong player for us.”

Simonson added that Hirsch has already made a positive impression within the squad.

“He’s also an incredibly likeable person who fits in with the chemistry of the group, having a positive impact both on and off the field.”
