McLean seeking second term on School District 57 Board

McLean said one of the achievements she is most proud of is the board’s focus on student learning and student voice throughout its term. She believes that emphasis has helped make the work happening in classrooms more visible to families and the broader community.

“After our public board meetings, we’re often talking about student learning,” she said. “I am very proud of that because our community, parents and families get to see what happens in schools every day.”

If reelected, McLean said she wants to continue building on that work while also strengthening School District 57’s voice at the provincial level. In 2025, she was elected to represent trustees across British Columbia through the BC School Trustees Association, a role she will seek to continue.

McLean said the provincial position has reinforced the importance of bringing northern and local perspectives to discussions about education policy.

As one of the region’s Indigenous elected officials, McLean said she feels a responsibility to help create greater visibility for Indigenous leadership. She hopes her presence in governance roles encourages Indigenous youth to see themselves in similar positions in the future.

“If I can help create that visibility, then it becomes normal for young Indigenous people to look at leadership positions and say, ‘I can do that,'” she said.

McLean thanked voters for placing their trust in her in 2022 and said she believes the knowledge and experience gained during her first term will allow her to continue contributing to the work ahead.
