Excel transportation faces major cuts following Canfor contract loss

PRINCE GEORGE — A long-standing Prince George transportation company is preparing for a major downsizing after losing a key forestry hauling contract in the wake of Canfor’s Northwood Pulp Mill closure.

Excel Transportation announced it will no longer serve as a hauling contractor for Canfor, a decision the company says stems from the ongoing downturn in northern B.C.’s forestry sector rather than any concerns about performance or safety.

“This is one of the most difficult announcements we’ve had to make in our company’s history,” said CEO Annie Horning in a statement.

The closure of the Northwood mill earlier this year eliminated roughly 300 Canfor jobs and significantly reduced the amount of wood being moved throughout the region. With less timber available to haul, Canfor reduced the number of hauling contracts it requires and ultimately chose not to retain Excel.

According to the company, Excel regularly ranked among the top-performing contractors on Canfor’s key performance indicator scorecards. The company also noted it earned a 99 per cent rating on its most recent Certificate of Recognition safety audit, completed just weeks before the contract decision was made.

The loss of the contract is expected to have a substantial impact on the family-owned business. Excel estimates it will lose up to 90 per cent of its Prince George workforce, with additional effects likely to be felt by local suppliers and contractors that support its operations.

Vice-President Carter Andersen thanked employees for their dedication over the years, saying the company was built on trust, hard work and a commitment to safety and professionalism.

Despite the setback, Excel says it is not shutting down. The company plans to spend the coming months restructuring its operations, reviewing its fleet requirements and pursuing new opportunities across northern B.C.’s forestry, industrial and resource sectors.

Founded in 1985, Excel Transportation is a third-generation, family-owned Prince George company. Company officials say they remain committed to the region and are determined to rebuild as the forestry industry continues to face unprecedented challenges.
