School Board Chair Craig Brennan seeking another term as trustee

A key priority for Brennan is the district’s new strategic plan, which he says will help guide decision-making for the next several years. The plan is expected to come before trustees later this month and, if approved, would provide direction for the district through 2032.

Brennan is a familiar face in Prince George education circles. He arrived in the city in 1981 as a student teacher and spent 40 years working in School District 57, including many years as a school administrator and principal. He retired in 2022 before successfully running for a seat on the board.

One issue that has become a focal point during the campaign is the board’s decision to approve a 28 per cent increase in trustee remuneration, which will take effect after the election.

Brennan defended the decision, noting he was among those who pushed for a review after several boards had avoided examining compensation levels.

He said trustees considered multiple options before selecting what he described as a middle-ground approach and argued the increase represents a small fraction of the district’s overall budget.

“The optics are not great,” Brennan acknowledged, “but I think when boards are performing well, they should be compensated for their time.”

Looking ahead, Brennan said he is proud of the district’s leadership team and the work completed to modernize policies and bylaws. He pointed to a forthcoming revision of the student code of conduct as another significant initiative.

Above all, Brennan said trustees must remain focused on students.

“Every decision we make at the board table should have students at the centre,” he said. “That’s what drives the work we do every day.”
