Community rallies behind purple socks

Prince George-Community spirit was on full display this week as local partners celebrated the success of a unique fundraiser that turned a simple pair of socks into meaningful support for residents living with Parkinson’s. A collaboration between Canadian Tire, Tourism Prince George, and Parkinson Prince George led to the creation and sale of 500 pairs of purple Mr. PG socks, raising $10,000 — all of it staying in the community.

The socks, designed by Tourism Prince George team member Kendall Scheck, quickly became a hit. According to Tourism Prince George’s Scott McWalter, the response was immediate once they went on sale at the Visitor Information Centre. “Within minutes of the socks going on sale, the community rallied behind the goal of selling all 500 pairs, and every dollar raised stays right here in Prince George,” he said. The design features the city’s beloved mascot, Mr. PG, a symbol McWalter says continues to unify residents and visitors alike.

McWalter added that the success of the fundraiser has opened the door to future collaborations. Tourism Prince George is exploring the possibility of making similar initiatives an annual tradition, potentially partnering with different nonprofit organizations each year. He says the goal is to support local causes while continuing to strengthen the visitor economy.

For the Prince George Parkinson’s Support Group, the funds come at a crucial time. Organizer Selen Apay says the group has struggled to maintain weekly exercise programs and regular meetings due to financial constraints. “This funding means our support group can continue our meetings and exercise programs for the next year, giving people living with Parkinson’s the stability and support they rely on,” she said.

Apay emphasized that the support group is more than a meeting place — it’s a lifeline for many residents navigating the challenges of Parkinson’s. The donation ensures members can continue accessing vital resources, connection, and community‑based care.

With the fundraiser’s success and strong community engagement, organizers say the purple Mr. PG socks have become more than merchandise — they’re a symbol of Prince George’s commitment to supporting one another.
