Protect yourself this flu season
PRINCE GEORGE – As temperatures begin to drop across Northern B.C., health professionals are reminding people that cold and flu season is just around the corner. While many people turn to vitamins and supplements in hopes of avoiding illness, pharmacists say prevention still comes down to a few tried-and-true methods.
Brett Chiasson, a pharmacist at Hart Drugs, says vaccination remains one of the best tools available to protect against seasonal illnesses. He recommends people receive their flu and COVID-19 shots when they become available, particularly those considered vulnerable. Seniors may also benefit from the RSV vaccine, while pregnant women are encouraged to discuss the vaccine with their healthcare provider to help protect newborns through transferred antibodies.
Beyond immunization, Chiasson says there is no magic solution for preventing colds and flu. Maintaining healthy habits such as getting enough sleep, eating a balanced diet rich in fruits and vegetables, and staying physically active can help support overall immune health heading into the fall and winter months.
