Timberwolves rally for draw against MacEwan

EDMONTON — The UNBC Timberwolves men’s soccer team earned its fourth draw of the Canada West season Friday, battling back from a deficit to secure a 2-2 result against the MacEwan Griffins in Edmonton.

UNBC entered the match looking for its first win of the campaign and created several early scoring opportunities. James Jordan narrowly missed the target in the fourth minute before Mehdi Bounaaja tested Griffins goalkeeper Kaleb Lutz moments later.

MacEwan opened the scoring in the 22nd minute when Felix Guite finished a passing play from close range to give the home side a 1-0 lead. The Griffins carried that advantage into halftime, outshooting the Timberwolves 5-2 in shots on target.

The Timberwolves nearly found an equalizer midway through the second half when Kaiden Young was denied twice in quick succession, including a shot that struck the post.

UNBC finally broke through in the 75th minute after MacEwan was called for a foul in the penalty area. Fifth-year defender Pipeijn van der Ende calmly converted the penalty kick to tie the game 1-1.

Just four minutes later, the Timberwolves completed the comeback. Luke Graham found Young in space, and the second-year midfielder used his speed to get behind the defence before chipping a shot over Lutz to give UNBC a 2-1 lead.

The advantage lasted only three minutes, however, as Adam Dasouki beat goalkeeper Callum Cuthbert with a long-range effort in the 82nd minute to level the match at 2-2.

Cuthbert played a key role in preserving the result, making five saves, including a critical stop in stoppage time on a one-on-one chance with Ali Yildiz.

The draw moves UNBC to 0-3-4 on the season. The Timberwolves continue their road trip Sunday when they visit the Lethbridge Pronghorns. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. Pacific Time.
