NDP names Jesse Gervais as candidate in Nechako Lakes

“We haven’t seen much of our MLA in the last several years, and it’s noticed on the ground and people are pretty upset about it,” he said. “I want to be the guy who shows up.”

He said his experience working on policy and rural issues gives him a strong understanding of the challenges facing northern communities. Gervais said he wants government programs and policies to better reflect the realities of life in smaller communities.

Among his top priorities are economic diversification, protecting health-care services and supporting education.

Gervais noted that many communities in the riding have historically relied on forestry, an industry facing ongoing challenges. While mining projects are creating new opportunities in the region, he said the local economy needs a broader foundation to remain resilient during downturns.

He also emphasized the importance of maintaining health services in rural communities, pointing to the region’s network of health centres and ongoing efforts to improve access to care.

Education is another key issue for the candidate, who said schools require adequate resources to meet student needs. He also highlighted transportation infrastructure, including highway maintenance, as a priority for northern residents.

With the election campaign underway, Gervais is currently the only declared candidate seeking to represent Nechako Lakes in the legislature.
