PRINCE GEORGE — Despite the Cowichan Valley Capitals getting the opening goals of the game, the Prince George Spruce Kings exploded to a 7-4 win on home ice on Saturday night (Oct. 3).

The Spruce Kings were called for too many players just 43 seconds into play and Capitals’ Loik Leductook advantage of the power play with the opening goal at the 2:01 mark.

German defenseman Cristian Achim responded at 4:02 with his first goal of his BCHL career to get the Spruce Kings on the scoreboard.

The Capitals regained the lead at the 11:24 mark when Bryce Bryant netted the puck past Spruce Kings goaltender Asher Netherton.

Four minutes later, Spruce Kings’ Rhett Tubello tied up the scoreboard with an assists from Mason Loewen to finish the first frame at 2-2.

The second frame was dominated by a trio of power play goals, as Ryan Wachtel earned his fifth of the season on a 5 on 3, followed by Swiss forward Noah Franzina’s first BCHL goal to pull the Spruce Kings ahead 4-2.

Slade Firkus  scored a goal late in the second frame to pull the Capitals within one point of their opponents, finishing off the period with a 4-3 score.

Prince George once again widened the lead 5:35 into the third period with Mason Loewen getting an assist from Michael Denney.

Just 18 seconds later, Dominic Szczygiel snapped home his second goal of the season with assists from Tubello and Netherton.

At 10:43, Wachtel passed to Charlie Spencer who found Cooper Faughnan, who then shot the puck for a goal on a fast-paced play.

With only 30.6 seconds left in play, Cowichan Valley’s Carter Dekay got the last goal of the game to make it a 7-4 finish.

Netherton picked up his first BCHL win, making 34 saves.

The Spruce Kings take a 4-1 record into Sunday’s 2 p.m. double header finale with the Cowichan Valley Capitals.
