Busy stretch begins for Cougars

PRINCE GEORGE- The Prince George Cougars are hoping a dramatic comeback victory on the weekend is the start of a strong stretch as they prepare for a busy week at the CN Centre.

Prince George returns home after earning a 4-3 shootout win over the Kelowna Rockets on Saturday night. The Cougars battled back from a 2-0 deficit before Jett Lajoie scored the shootout winner, helping the team secure the extra point. The victory also marked the beginning of a much busier portion of the schedule, with the Cougars set to play four home games in five nights.

The recent schedule has been anything but normal for Prince George. Through the opening weeks of the season, the Cougars have played just three games over a three-week stretch, giving the roster plenty of practice time but little opportunity to build game rhythm.

Head coach Mark Lamb says the unusual schedule has tested the group.

“We’ve done a really good job of managing our schedule. It’s been very tough,” said Lamb. “You’re basically playing one game a weekend for the last three or four weekends, so it’s tough to get any momentum, tough to really find chemistry and rhythm.”

Despite the lack of games, Lamb believes the team has put together strong performances recently and is in a good position heading into a demanding stretch of hockey.

A major factor in the Cougars’ early success has been the play of goaltender Peyton Shore. Shore turned aside 38 shots against Kelowna, including five key saves in overtime, helping Prince George secure the victory.

Captain Corbin Vaughan says the extra practice time has helped the team focus on details and prepare for the increased workload ahead.

“A couple weeks of a lot of practice was kind of a grind at times, but focusing on certain details each and every day was huge for our group,” said Vaughan.

The challenge won’t get any easier as the Vancouver Giants come to town. Vancouver enters the matchup riding a four-game winning streak and already owns a victory over the Cougars this season, defeating Prince George 4-2 on September 27 at the Langley Events Centre.

Lamb expects the Giants to bring a hard-working and structured approach.

“They’ve got some skill in their lineup, but they’re going to be very detailed,” said Lamb. “They’re going to be all about winning battles, and it’s going to be a very tough contest for us.”

The Cougars will also continue adjusting after losing veteran leaders through recent roster moves. Vaughan acknowledged those departures are significant but says the leadership group has remained united.

“They’re definitely big losses, but we’re such a tight group,” said Vaughan. “The whole culture around here is great, so guys are stepping up where they need to.”

With momentum on their side and a busy schedule ahead, the Cougars will look to continue their strong play and even the season series against a red-hot Vancouver squad.
