Cougars score late to salvage win over Giants

Nov 2, 2026 | 7:02 AM

LANGLEY — The Prince George Cougars nearly snatched defeat from the jaws of victory.

After blowing a 4-1 lead in the third period, the Cougars scored with a minute and four seconds remaining to defeat the Vancouver Giants on the road Sunday (Nov. 1) 5-4.

The Giants opened the scoring early in the first period, but Riley Ashe responded 17 seconds later for the Cougars with a wraparound goal.

The Cougars then turned the game upside down with three goals in just under three minutes. Kayden Lemire intercepted a puck in the slot and fired home a wrist shot, Jonathan Bitonti banked a pass off a Giants skate and in and Cole Hajt pounced on a rebound to give Prince George a 4-1 lead.

While the second period was scoreless, the Giants eventually responded with a flurry of goals of their own, scoring three times in just over five minutes to tie the game 4-4 in the third.

However, the Cougars wouldn’t give up a point or more goals. Tre Peck scored his team leading seventh goal of the season on a rebound to give Prince George the lead again. A lead they wouldn’t give up.

The Cougars improve to 4-7-0-2 on the 2026-27 Western Hockey League (WHL) season, good for 10 points in 13 games. However, they’re still at the bottom of the WHL Western Conference standings.

The Cougars return to Prince George Wednesday (Nov. 4) to welcome the Moose Jaw Warriors to CN Centre for a 7:00 p.m. start.
