Low River Levels Impacting Fishing

As temperatures fall, and the geese fly south, there are concerns about enough food in the pantry at the L’heidli Tenneh first nation. Low water levels on the Fraser are affecting the community’s ability to boat on the river to access hunting grounds.
Fishing on the Fraser was open for a handful of days this summer in comparison with a usual 2 months. With only about eight hundred fish caught, The L’heidli are depending on other first nations for fish to prepare for the winter.
After a summer with 40 percent less precipitation than normal, the fraser sits at about 75 percent of where it should be. Meteorologist Stephen Dery says it is a cause for concern, especially with a dry forecast in the next few weeks to come.
