Local Salon Goes Green For New Year

PRINCE GEORGE-  New Year’s resolutions are notorious for being cliche and hard to keep up with, but going green in 2018 doesn’t have to be. A local business is jumping on board with a growing green initiative.

The London is one of a handful of Prince George salons that have made a pledge to become more eco-friendly. It has recently become a Greencircle Salon, which means everything from leftover hair dye, to empty shampoo bottles, and even hair clippings are recycled.  “They put the hair into nylon booms, and they use it to help clean up oil spills in the ocean and wherever it’s needed,” said hairdresser, Meka Jensen. More than 1500 salons across North America have joined the Greencircle program, and have helped to divert waste from waterways and landfills.

REAPS suggests you start small if you’ve made a similar resolution this year. “Always start small, and as soon as you get the hang of it add something else,” said Executive Director, Terri McClymont, “we all can’t do everything, but accumulatively we can all make a difference.”

McClymont suggested small changes like bringing your own water bottle or coffee mug to work, as well as bringing re-usable bags to the grocery store. REAPS has recycling tips and other information on its website.
