Raising Excitement For Winter Games

PRINCE GEORGE – The 2019 Canada Winter Games flag was raised in front of City Hall to honour the MNP Torch Relay kicking off.

Ottawa was the first City to fire up the Torch on October 4th out of 48 different communities across Canada that will take part in celebrating the relay. Prince George is 1 of only 7 spots in BC that will carry the torch through the City before it arrives in Red Deer for the opening ceremonies.

“This is the first winter games since we’ve hosted it. And we are also the host community for the Torch Relay so the torch is actually going to be coming here on December 8th which is also very exciting. And it’s just a way for us to kind of relive and to really cheer on our local as well as provincial athletes that are going to be competing in the games,” says Civic Events Coordinator Jen Tkachuk.

The raising of the Winter Games flag and the upcoming Torch Relay are both excuses to look back proudly at the 2015 Winter Games that were held in Prince George.

“Well, it was really important that we recognized that we hosted the 2015 Canada Winter Games because it was really a monumental experience for us up here in the North. It was also the first time that the Lheidli T’enneh was the first host Nation. Also there was a lot of great things that came out of that event as well as a lot of community celebrations and nightly entertainment and the plaza just came to life so there was a lot of really great energy around the games.”

The 2019 Torch will make its stop in Prince George on December 8th at the Canada Games Plaza and the opening ceremonies for the games will begin in Red Deer on February 15th.
