Marion Buller Addresses BC Assembly Of First Nations
PRINCE GEORGE — The Chief Commissioner for the National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls spoke to the BC Assembly of First Nations this morning. Marion Buller spoke to the Commission’s request for a two-year extension to its mandate, saying the depth of work yet to be done cannot be addressed with a deadline of this November.
“I know the families want closure, but we must balance that with doing the job right,” she told the gathering of BC Chiefs.
The Commission was established in late 2015 and that mandate is set to close November 1st. Buller says that would mean the hearings and statement gathering would have to cease at the end of April in order for things like transcriptions. That, she says, would “result in significant gaps in the outcomes.”
The largest hearing yet is set for 4th to 8th in Vancouver, where more than 150 people have already registered.
