Amendment Passed To Help Northern Real Estate Industry

PRINCE GEORGE – An amendment was passed over the weekend by the BC Chamber regarding the recent changes for limited dual agency representation in the real estate industry. It was presented by the Prince George Chamber of Commerce in consultation with its members. 

Todd Corrigall, CEO of the Prince George Chamber of Commerce says the amendment will focus on making the opportunities and options more available for buyers and sellers in rural and northern communities. He adds, “The efficacy of a realtor becomes based on their abilities to work in those communities.” Therefore, the proposed changes would negatively impact the smaller communities including Prince George.

Corrigall says there is also “a very limited amount of commercial realtors in rural and northern communities which makes it very challenging for those limited dual agency pieces.”

The Prince George Chamber worked closely with their community partners, including the Northern BC Real Estate Board and the BC Real Estate Association on developing this amendment.

Looking ahead, the next step is to bring the amendment to the B.C. government in the hope to develop fair rule changes that do not negatively impact the real estate industry in those smaller markets.

In addition to the real estate amendment, there were three others that were passed. Those consisted of engaging businesses and the community on electoral reform, minimizing negative impacts of the Employer Health Tax and protecting the funding for tourism marketing programs and projects.
