UNBC Cafeteria Workers Vote In Favour Of Strike
PRINCE GEORGE- 88 per cent of UNBC cafeteria workers voted in favour of a strike Wednesday. This comes after months of negotiations with their employer, Compass Group, who they say refuses to give them a living wage. Workers say they don’t want to go on strike and hope the University will step in to help. They say UNBC’s contract with Compass runs out at the end of the school year and workers want a commitment from the University to ensure they will be rehired. Food workers have been gathering letters from university staff and students, saying hundreds of people have voiced their support. “For us to go on strike would be a disaster, we don’t want to because these kids have only just come back and for a lot of them I’m sure it’s the first time they’ve ever been away from home,” said cafeteria worker, Jeannie Gilbert, “but if that’s what we have to do, that’s what we have to do.” Gilbert says they will go back into negotiations with their employer next Thursday.
