PRINCE GEORGE – There were bats swinging and a hard white ball flying through the air on the Prince George Secondary School field on the weekend. The game being played wasn’t baseball, it was the second annual cricket tournament put on by the PG Cricket Club. The tournament featured four local Prince George teams and three from out of town; Fort St John, Quesnel, and Williams Lake. The sport doesn’t carry as big a following here in Canada like it does in India but Navi Ghuman, the organizer of the tournament believes it adds a touch of India to Prince George.

“There are so many kids that play cricket now that have been coming from India to keep them occupied, keep them away from everything else, have some sports going, so it means lots to us to play here and it brings some of the Indian cultures back here and that’s what we are trying to do.”

After some round-robin games, Finals were held on Sunday with two Prince George teams facing off for the trophy. Benny Mann, one of the captains going into the finals says he plays because it’s what he was meant to do.

“It’s in the blood, that’s the main game of our country and that’s why everyone here likes to play cricket.”
