Christmas Fundraising Getting Underway

The Council of Seniors has launched its annual food drive to support the Christmas hamper program. Last year, the Council filled 300 hampers and will need to do the same again this year.
“So basically, non-perishable foods, such as hot, nutritional soups,” explains Lola-Dawn Fennell, Executive Director for the Council of Seniors. “Think, ‘Stick to your ribs’ kinda stuff.”
The list for possible donations looks like this:

Vegetable and Fruits: canned vegetables and fruits packed in 100% water, unsweetened fruit sauces or juices,
Meat or Meat Alternatives: canned fish or fish, ham or corned beef, peanut butter, canned beans or lentils,
Grains: oatmeal, rice, pastas,
Milk or Milk Alternatives: evaporated milk or milk powder, soy, rice or coconut drinks,
Hearty Meals: canned soups and stews

Donations can be dropped of at the Seniors Resource Centre on Victoria Street between 9 .m. and 3 p.m.

And the Council of Seniors is not the only agency doing hampers this year. The Prince George Native Friendship Centre and the St. Vince de Paul are also doing hampers.

Also, beginning on Monday, the Salvation Army is launching its annual kettle campaign.
“The Salvation Army’s Christmas kettle campaign is the only major fuindraiser that we do all year long,” says Cpt Neil Wilkinson, with the local branch of the Salvation Army. “The money is how we operate our food bank and our community ministries throughout the year.”

The hope is to raise $250,000. There will be 12 locations for the kettles and, if you wish to oversee a kettle, call: 250-596-HOPE (4673).
