Northern Bear Aware Big Winners

For the third year, the Northern Lights Estate Winery and Bear Aware have joined forces for success. Over the course of the Fall, local residents have been collecting apples and dropping them off at the winery for production of a unique wine. After three years, a total of 35,000 pounds of apples have been collecting, with more than 21,000 pounds collected this year alone. It means thousands of bear attractants are out of circulation.
“The solution to both problems came together in a very natural way,” says Doug Bell of the Northern Lights Estate Winery.
A portion of the proceeds from buying some of the apples goes to Northern Bear Aware. This year, that amount is $7,500, half of which goes to the Northern Lights Wildlife Society, an animal sanctuary in Smithers.
