Kings Keep Rolling

Kings tear past Portage, remain undefeated at NJAC

May 15, 2019 | 9:41 PM

It only took 55 seconds for the Spruce Kings to get on the board Wednesday night.

Dylan Anhorn knifed through the defence before ripping his first goal of the National Junior A Championship past Portage Terriers goalie Nathan Moore.

The goal seemed to bring a hush to the arena, like everybody knew what was coming next. Six minutes later, Chong Min Lee scored. Ten minutes after that, Ben Brar netted his second goal in as many games. That made it 3-0 by the end of the first, a period where the Spruce Kings outshot the 0-3 Terriers 20-3.

When the team came out for the second period, it was Keenan Rancier, not Logan Neaton between the pipes. Rancier, who hasn’t played in a game since late February, would only be tested seven times throughout the next 40 minutes, stopping all but one shot en route to the Kings 5-1 victory.

Nolan Welsh and Nick Poisson added goals in the offensive onslaught that saw the team improve to 3-0 in the round robin. They’ll close out the preliminary round Thursday night against the 3-0 Brooks Bandits. The winner of the contest will claim top seed heading into Saturday’s semifinals.

The puck will drop from Centennial Regional Arena at 6 o’clock Pacific on Thursday.
